Hello Fellow Democrats:
It feels to many of us that we are at a turning point in our national history, like many of the liberties and foundations of government are being, day by day, stripped away. It might do us good to refresh ourselves about the noble intentions of our (imperfect) founding fathers. Interestingly on PBS /KQED presently, the Ken Burns two-part documentary titled simply “Thomas Jefferson” is available for viewing. Some of us have found the show refreshing, a good reminder of the constant need for people in a democracy to be alert to the dangers of edging tyranny and take over by the uber-rich.
But what can we seniors do? PLENTY!! We are, at this age, the credible voices of WIDSOM! So, let’s raise our concerns for America together and see if we can’t save the democracy we were lucky enough to grow up in. Consider joining Oakmont Democrats Club.
Below are a few quotes that might help inspire us be a part of a nationwide demand that our federal system of checks and balances—No King!—remains, and that our democracy serves all Americans, not just the wealthy. Here are a few reminders of why we need, more than ever, to speak up:
· Community, community, community; we need it in these dark times
· An informed citizenry is at the heart of a dynamic democracy. (Thomas Jefferson)
· Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have… by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. (Thomas Jefferson)
· You cannot take your freedoms for granted. Just like generations who have come before… you have to do your part to preserve and protect those freedoms. (Michelle Obama)
· We've become, now, an oligarchy instead of a democracy. I think that's been the worst damage to the basic moral and ethical standards to the American political system that I've ever seen in my life. (Jimmy Carter)
· Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on (Thurgood Marshall)
It is in this spirit of wanting to preserve our democracy in the face of its daily being chipped away that our local Oakmont Democratic Club, Oakmont Progressives, and others, will be offering topical educational programs and speakers here at Oakmont. So be sure and watch the news of coming events at OakmontDemocraticAlliance.org, and please, too, pay your Oakmont Dems dues ($25/year) by clicking the button below and come to our meetings so we can join together to do everything we can to save democracy as we have been privileged to know it.
Can Thomas Jefferson, Jimmy Carter, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Rosa Parks count on you to be as brave as they were? Many of us are in. Please join us!
